Trash and Recycling
Republic Services is Heather Knoll Cluster’s trash hauler. They pick up
trash and recycling on Mondays in our community. Trash cans may be
brought to the curb at 6pm on the previous Sunday and must be kept in
the garage when trash has been picked up. April through December
Republic will pick up bagged lawn debris on Wednesdays. They will
make two pick-ups for Christmas trees following the holiday.
Every county in Virginia has their own rules regarding recycling. Fairfax County governs our rules for trash disposal. Here in Fairfax County, glass must be separated from recycling. Republic Services does NOT accept glass items. Glass recycling can be dropped off at the nearby glass recycling bin in Baron Cameron Park, 11300 Baron Cameron Avenue, Reston.
Here is a handy guide, based on Fairfax County rules, for you to use when recycling:
Allowable:
- Plastics #1-7 (Refer to number on bottom of container)
- Metal cans, aluminum foil and foil pans - steel, tin, bi-metal and aluminum
- Cardboard, newspaper and magazines including newspaper inserts, catalogs, paperback books, phone books and brochures
All should be empty, clean and dry. Cardboard boxes should be flattened.
Not Allowed:
- Plastic Bags (do not put recycling into plastic bags)
- Plastic food wrappers
- Plastic without numbers on the bottom
- Greasy food containers
- Yard waste (HKC recycles this on Wednesdays from April through December)
- Food or liquid waste
- Construction debris
- Scrap Metal
- Hazard waste
- Electronics
- Cables or batteries
- Diapers
- Tissue
- Bio-hazardous waste
- Light bulbs
- Ceramics
- Dishes or mirrors
- Hoses
- Toys
- Clothes
- Shoes
- Tools
- Plastic straws
- Polystyrene foam (Styrofoam)
- To-go lids
- Holiday decorations
- Hardback books (think about sharing these through HKC’s Free Little Library, space permitting)
